US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived in Israel today as part of a Middle East tour aimed at gathering support for Ukraine and allaying the Jewish state’s concerns about a possible deal on Iran’s nuclear program.
Leaving Poland, where he accompanied US President Joe Biden to meetings aimed at consolidating Western support for Ukraine, Blinken arrived at Tel Aviv International Airport tonight.
The American diplomat is expected to stay in Israel until Monday, the first stop of his tour in the region, while he will also travel to the occupied West Bank, Morocco and Algeria.
The US Secretary of State wants to show that the US has not lost interest in the Middle East, even if it seems to have turned its attention to China and, more recently, Ukraine.
It hopes to support US and NATO efforts to counter the Russian invasion, in a context marked by the severe economic consequences of the war, in particular the explosion in energy prices and the threat of a wheat shortage, which could severe blow to Arab countries.
Tomorrow afternoon, Anthony Blinken is expected to meet with his counterparts from Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Egypt in the St Boker, in the Negev desert. The meeting was described as “historic” by Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid.
