US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called Russian President Vladimir Putin’s warning to the West about the use of nuclear weapons irresponsible and ill-timed as world leaders gather in New York to attend the UN General Assembly. “It’s completely irresponsible,” Blinken said today in an interview with the MSNBC network. “I think a lot of people in the world have been very clear about that when they strike the nuclear sword themselves – including China, in the past. So I would say especially what he’s doing now (such statements about nuclear), while world leaders have gathered… and are talking about the need for more disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation.” Putin warned the West yesterday that Russia could use nuclear weapons if hit by conventional missiles, as the US and Britain weighed whether to give Ukraine permission to strike Western conventional missiles at targets inside Russia.
