Blinken: Ratification of the Law of the Sea for the benefit of the United States

Ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea will work for the benefit of the United States, as the US Secretary of State estimated Anthony Blinken during a hearing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The US Secretary of State expressed support for the ratification of the Law of the Sea in the light of the efforts made by Washington together with other countries to counter China’s aggressive policy in the South China Sea.

At this point, as broadcast by AMPE, Mr. Blinken clarified that he expresses a personal opinion, as he did not have the opportunity to discuss this issue with President Biden. However, he reminded that the Joe Biden had advocated ratification of the convention during his long tenure on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

For his part, the current chairman of the Commission, Robert Menendez, spoke of ideologies that prevent him from participating in such contracts. As he argued, these anchorages cost time and money in the US. “It is extremely important for both security and financial reasons to ratify the contract,” he said.
