US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has said he is “convinced” that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s intention is to overthrow the Ukrainian government.
The head of US diplomacy told ABC television the day after the start of the Russian military operation that Moscow would “attack the capital and other major cities.”
“We are seeing forces coming from the north, from the east, from the south, and this is the plan we have been pointing out to the world in recent weeks,” Blinken added.
Nevertheless, he assured that Ukraine “will prevail”.
“In the short, medium or long term, I am confident that Ukraine ‘s democracy and independence will prevail,” he said.
Asked if he was concerned about the safety of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Blinkes said: “As far as I know, President Zelensky remains in his post in Ukraine and of course we are concerned about the safety of all our friends in Ukraine, government officials and others.”
