Blinken: Sanctions in Russia are not linked to the Iran nuclear deal

The sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine have nothing to do with a possible deal on Iran’s nuclear program, US Secretary of State said today Anthony Blinken.

Russia on Saturday demanded written guarantees from Washington that sanctions against it would not affect its co-operation with Iran.

In an interview with CBS television’s Face the Nation, Blinken said an agreement with Iran was “close”, but that “a couple of difficult issues” remained unresolved.

“The sanctions imposed on Russia… have nothing to do with the Iran nuclear deal and its prospects for revival. “These things are completely different and are not connected, in any way, to each other.”

Russia’s request could torpedo months of negotiations to revive the 2015 agreement by which the international community lifted sanctions against Iran.

At the same time the Prime Minister of Britain Boris Johnson told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he would work with his international allies to secure more defense military equipment to help Kyiv.

“Leaders discussed the urgent needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the prime minister undertook to work with his partners to provide more defense equipment,” according to the text of a Johnson-Zelensky telephone conversation released by Downing Street.
