Blinken, UN say they are ready to support return to democracy in Venezuela

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinkenand the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, spoke on Wednesday (7) and expressed their willingness to support a process led by Venezuela to restore democratic norms, the State Department reported.

In a statement, the two expressed concern for the safety and well-being of opposition leaders following the July 28 election, which both candidate Edmundo González and President Nicolás Maduro say they won.

Venezuela’s electoral authority declared Maduro the winner of the election early on July 29, with about 51% of the vote. However, the opposition claims to have copies of the vote counts that show González won a resounding victory.

The electoral authority – which the opposition accuses of being biased towards Maduro – has yet to reproduce the results it claims to have.

The opposition, led by María Corina Machado y González, a 74-year-old former diplomat, said this week that it had won the presidential election with more than 7 million votes, compared with Maduro’s 3.3 million votes. That result is broadly similar to what independent polls had predicted.
