US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Monday “strongly condemned” the seizure of two Greek-flagged ships on Friday by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the State Department said.
“Continued harassment of vessels by Iran and interference with the exercise of cruising rights and freedoms pose a threat to maritime security and the global economy,” Blinken said in a statement.
Blinken made the comments in a telephone conversation on Monday with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, Reuters reports, citing a statement from the ministry.
U.S. and Greek officials also called on Iran to immediately release its ships, cargoes and crews. Blinken said the United States was standing with its NATO ally “in the face of this unjustified seizure.”
