The United States wants a more stable relationship with Russia, but much will depend on how aggressively the Kremlin decides to act, the US Secretary of State said. Anthony Blinken.
“President (Joe) Biden has been clear for a long time, even before he takes office, that if Russia chooses to act recklessly or aggressively, we will respond,” Blinken told reporters after talks with him. His British counterpart, him Dominic Raab, at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in London.
“But we do not seek escalation: we would prefer a more stable, more predictable relationship. “If Russia moves in that direction, we will do the same.”
As for China, Blinken said the West was not trying to contain it. “It is not our goal to try to contain China. “What we are trying to do is to maintain order based on international rules on which our countries have invested so much for many decades,” he explained.
Referring to North Korea, the US foreign minister said the United States hoped the country would seize the opportunity and engage in diplomacy to “see if there are any means to move towards the goal of full denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”
“We therefore expect to see not only what North Korea is saying but also what it will actually do in the coming days and months,” he said.
Biden said last week that he would use diplomacy as well as “deterrents” to curb Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions. North Korea responded that Biden had maintained a “hostile policy” pursued by the United States toward it for half a century.
