Blockchain.com datacenter fire leads to work stoppage for 5 hours

The online cryptocurrency wallet Blockchain.com crashed due to which users of the service could not log into accounts for five hours.

On the evening of March 9, at about 18:20 Moscow time, Blockchain.com technical specialists confirmed the problem with access via the API and through the web interface and reported that they are working on fixing it. The service management urged customers to stay calm and not resort to the help of third parties, who are supposedly ready to fix the malfunction, and also recommended not to follow third-party links. The problem was fixed and accesses were restored at about 23:00.

Judging by the information
page, where full information about the development of the situation is published, the blockchain observer and the Blockchain.com exchange are fully functional, while the status of the wallet was indicated as “Serious failure”. Also, a large number of errors were revealed in the service API. Later it turned out that the failure was due to a fire that broke out in one of the data processing centers (DPC). Blockchain.com engineers have redirected traffic to other data centers to restore round-the-clock work. Data loss or leakage probably did not occur.

Casa CTO Jameson Lopp commented on the incident on Twitter. He wrote that after the Blockchain.com wallet went offline, the number of transactions on the Bitcoin network dropped sharply by 30-40%. This decrease may indicate that such a percentage of new transactions in Bitcoin are accounted for by Blockchain.com users.

As a reminder, last month, during a strategic funding round, the Blockchain.com platform raised about $ 120 million from venture capitalists.
