BlockFi startup hit by “racist and vicious” hacker attack

Blockfi Startup Hit By

Cryptocurrency loan startup BlockFi has suspended new user registrations following a “racist and very evil” attack.

The hacker has registered about 1,000 accounts in the BlockFi application using real email addresses of unsuspecting users. At the same time, in the fields “Name” and “Last name”, he indicated racist and vulgar statements, so notifications from BlockFi with such “jokes” came to users’ mailboxes. According to the estimates of the startup representatives, about 500 such notifications were automatically sent before registration was blocked.

“I received a letter from BlockFi with a request to confirm the registration (and I did not register there). And when I opened the letter, it said “Hello, nigga” … I will not repeat all this racist text here, “-
indignant Philadelphia journalist Sara Sheridan.

After the attack was detected, new registrations were suspended. According to Zac Prince, CEO of the credit service, the attack was aimed at creating a negative image and sentiment around BlockFi.

The timing of the attack is interesting – now the service is conducting a series D round of funding, in which it raised more than $ 100 million. BlockFi’s capitalization is approaching $ 3 billion, and the company was founded just three years ago.

In early February, the service for maintaining cryptocurrency portfolios Blockfolio underwent a similar attack. The hackers were able to send notifications to users of the service with various offensive messages.
