Blood and urine tests can detect early-stage cancer, study finds

Analysis of urine and blood samples can detect the presence of 14 types of cancer, even in early stages, according to a study published in the journal of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States (PNAS).

The discovery is important, as the early detection of several types of cancer through a single test would help reduce mortality from the disease, which is usually associated with diagnosis at an advanced stage.

The study examined the free glycosaminoglycans present in urine and plasma, and found that they could serve to point out the presence of cancer, even in stage 1 of the disease. The analysis also allows predicting the location of tumors with an accuracy of 89%.

However, some limitations were found, such as a sensitivity of only 10% in detecting stage 1 cancer in the research validation studies, and the impossibility of detecting specific types of the disease, such as tumors in the brain, reproductive or urinary system.

Even so, the discovery is important to accelerate the implementation of early diagnosis of various types of cancer.
