Blood banks need more donations at this time of year, warns hematologist

On Saturday, November 25th, National Blood Donor Day is celebrated.

The date is strategic, as the holiday season, with school holidays and holidays, directly impacts blood bank stocks.

This is what the hematologist and hemotherapist at IBCC Oncologia Aline Souza explains.

“People travel and end up not going to banks, and at this time there is an increase in the number of people who need transfusions, with an increase in car accidents among those who already need them regularly”, he said, to CNN Radio.

She appealed to people to put blood donation on their list of year-end activities, as “all blood banks in Brazil have low stocks.”

“All blood types are welcome. The negative types are the most critical, but they are all suboptimal”, he added.

The doctor remembers that “we never know when someone close to us will need transfusions.”

“The donation is simple, quick, takes less than ten minutes and the donor only spends 30 minutes at the site, on average,” he said.

To donate, the person must be between 16 and 69 years old, and be healthy: “Common diseases such as hypertension and diabetes do not prevent donation.”
