The National Cancer Institute recorded a 30% reduction in blood bags collected in September this year compared to the same period in 2021. The number represents 272 fewer bags compared to September last year.
According to Inca, the situation is worrying because of the holidays in November, a period when demand usually increases. So far, just over 7,000 donations have been made throughout 2022, 1,000 fewer than the previous year.
The Inca needs at least 70 donations a day, of all blood types, to keep the stock sufficiently stocked.
“We need blood donations to be regular. Treatment protocols must be maintained and blood available at the exact moment the patient needs it. The sharp drop has a great impact on the treatment of these people”, reinforces the head of the Inca hemotherapy sector, Iara Motta.
Economist Daniel Maldonado has been a blood donor for 15 years. For him, the act is a life mission.
“I started donating blood when I was 18 under the influence of my father. Since then, I have always tried to donate every three months, which is the recommended period. I understand that this type of action is very important. Most of the time I donate to people I don’t know, few times I donated to someone who was in need of transfusion. I’ve been through situations of people in my family who have already needed it, I know how important it is. In addition to being an act of care, of love for others, it is also an act of volunteering, of service”, said Daniel.
Financial assistant Thiago Alves also has a habit of donating. He has already donated twice in 2022 and plans to make his third donation of the year next week.
“Our good is our health, so passing it on to those in need is really cool. And they (Inca) send SMS, email, always calling us to go there. When someone is using your blood, they say “your blood is being used right now and it’s saving a life”, it’s really cool. I think everyone should do this. This form is the best form of affection to help people who are in need and going through difficult times”, declared Thiago.
To donate, it is necessary to present a photo ID, and those under 18 must have the formal consent of their guardian. No appointment is required to donate blood.
According to guidelines from the Ministry of Health and the National Health Surveillance Agency, people diagnosed with or suspected of having Covid-19 are able to donate blood 10 days after symptoms disappear. Those who had contact with positive cases can donate after seven days of the last contact, while asymptomatic with a positive test can donate after 10 days of the test. Those who did voluntary isolation or by medical determination can perform the action 10 days after the end of isolation.
