Bloody clashes in Darfur, at least 36 dead

Clashes between members of tribes in South Darfur, southwest Sudan, where at least 36 people were killed.

Clashes broke out between the Falata tribe and the Taisa Arab tribe in Umm Dafuk, near the border with the Central African Republic, eyewitnesses told AFP and were broadcast by AMPE.

This morning, the situation “stabilized” according to Suna.

At present the causes of this episode have not been clarified, but the conflicts over access to land and water are common in the area.

“The army was deployed in fighting zones to end the clashes between the Falata and Taisa tribes, which killed 36 people and injured 32 on both sides,” Suna was quoted as saying by Southern officials. Darfur.

Isa Omar, a resident of Umm Dafuk, told AFP by telephone that he “heard a roar of heavy artillery throughout the fighting.”

In April, 132 people lost their lives in clashes between Arab tribes and the Masalits in West Darfur.

In January, two weeks after the end of his joint peacekeeping mission UN and the African Union in Darfur (Minuad), similar clashes had killed 250 people, most of them again in West Darfur.

As early as the end of December, Darfur residents were protesting against the announcement of Minuad’s departure.

The resurgence of violence in Darfur is one of the many challenges facing the transitional government of Sudan, which came to power after the ouster of Omar al-Besir in April 2019.

Khartoum signed a landmark peace agreement in October with several rebel groups, most notably Darfur, and is continuing peace talks with some rebel groups that have not yet reached an agreement.

However, these do not seem to be related to the recent incidents of violence.

The conflict in Darfur broke out in 2003 among the Besir forces and members of ethnic minorities who considered themselves marginalized.

The government had deployed armed militias consisting mainly of Arab nomads, who were later accused of ethnic cleansing.

The violence claimed the lives of some 300,000 people and resulted in the displacement of 2.5 million, mostly in the early years of the conflict, according to the UN.
