Bloomberg: next AirPods Pro will include fitness features

According to Bloomberg, new AirPods Pro wireless earbuds will be released in 2022, which will be able to track the user’s workouts. The fresh material of the publication also says that by the end of this year, Apple may release an updated version of the AirPods headphones, the design of which will be borrowed from the current AirPods Pro.

Citing “the people in the know,” Bloomberg claims the next AirPods Pro will feature new motion sensors with a focus on activity tracking. Adding fitness features would be a logical step for Cupertinos. The company already has solid experience in this area. Take the collaboration with Nike, with which it introduced sneakers with small built-in sensors that send activity data to the iPhone or iPod nano.

Since then, Apple has greatly expanded its offerings in this direction with the Apple Watch, which has a variety of sensors to track steps taken, heart rate, and even blood oxygen levels. All of these features ultimately led to the Apple Fitness + service. It allows users to train under the supervision of experts through any iPhone, iPad or Apple TV with the tracking functionality provided by the Apple Watch.

Embedding additional sensors in AirPods Pro can eliminate the need for an Apple Watch or make physical activity tracking more accurate by combining two data sources.

Apple isn’t the first to add fitness to its headphones. The Jabra Elite Sport, which debuted in 2017, has a built-in heart rate monitor, and Samsung and Bose have also released headphones with similar technology in the past. And recently, the largest retailer Amazon added physical activity tracking to its second-generation Amazon Echo Buds. However, Apple has a clear advantage in how to use the data it receives.
