Just as the flap of a butterfly’s wings can generate a tsunami on the other side of the world, there was a time when a mix with a color combination deemed wrong could have caused a hurricane of mass hysteria. Blue with black? Never! Red and pink? To faint. And let’s not talk about the mix gold Silver. Call the fashion police immediately.

Although many of us grew up with the fashion maxim that certain nuances would get along as well as Montagues and Capulets, the myth that they repelled each other has now been overcome. And the first to break these axioms of style were the same renowned designers who then gave everyone the license to combine as they pleased black and blue, pink and red and even gold and silver, in the sartorial combo once on the black list of grandmothers, and which today, on the contrary, is decidedly cool, re-proposed on the catwalk and on the red carpet.
In the past, fashion etiquette included many style rules that had to be observed carefully so as not to slip on a banana peel. But today that there are no longer strict wardrobe rules, these previously unforgivable mistakes have even become trends. Ready to check them out?
Let’s start from blue and black, now considered, thanks to Giorgio Armani, among the most elegant of all to show off. The fact is that before we were convinced that dark shades together didn’t work: first of all we have to thank, however, King George, Yves Saint Laurent who, precisely with the use of colour, liberated women by daring with bold shades such as yellow, fuchsia, purple and red, proposed in patterns or under the precious blend of color blocking.

Daniel SIMON/Getty ImagesHe literally overturned the aesthetic codes of the time, not only daring with dramatic and bright nuances but finding revolutionary combinations. Among these there is precisely the combination of blue and black, two intense and deep shades that capture the light and that no one had ever dared to combine in the ensemble before the French creative. And which after him becomes irresistibly trés chic and an original idea to revisit the classic total black. Spotted on red carpets and on the street: Jennifer Lawrence recently showed off the coolness of this combination on the streets of New York appearing in soft navy blue trousers and a black tank top.

GothamFrom the refinement of blue and black, to the whimsy of pink and red, another style anathema from the past. It was 2011 when Sarah Jessica Parkerin a suit designed by Prabal Gurung, convinced many of us to wear these two colors together which, however, share the same DNA (pink is nothing other than the fusion of red and white).

Ray TamarraThus cleared by Carrie Bradshaw in the flesh, pink and red also began a happy marriage increasingly spotted in fashion collections and on the trendiest celebrities in the world (remember the spectacular beauty of Naomi Campbell in Valentino on the red carpet of last Cannes Film Festival?). In short, pink + red is today the combination that makes the look of those who show it more succulent, seductive and jaunty at the same time.

Last but not least, Who doesn’t remember the old adage of never mixing different metals, under penalty of excommunication from the fashion paradise? How much relief can we breathe now? Yellow gold and white gold (or silver and platinum) they can be worn together, let’s all repeat. The combination of different metals in a single jewel, or in an accumulation of pieces – as is now the trend – actually gives a new three-dimensionality to the precious items (they know this very well, being Rita Ora And Rihanna). Once again Saint Laurent demonstrated this amply in the Spring-Summer 2022 collection in which it presented, among other things, necklaces with boules in the two metals.
