Jeff Bezos’ rocket company Blue Origin placed its third mission to the “edge” of space this Saturday (11).
The mission features two distinguished passengers, ABC’s “Good Morning America” presenter Michael Strahan and the daughter of famed astronaut Alan Shepard. Four other people took part in the supersonic tour.
The crew took off aboard one of Blue Origin’s suborbital space tourism rockets, called New Shepard at 10:01 am local time.
The rocket departed the company’s launch facility near the rural town of Van Horn, Texas, where Bezos owns a ranch.
Alan Shepard, Laura’s father, took a suborbital flight in 1961 and later walked on the Moon.
In addition to Laura and Strahan, investors Dylan Taylor, Evan Dick and Lane Bess, as well as Bess’ adult son Cameron Bess, occupied the remaining seats.
Blue Origin said Strahan and Shepard are flying as “honored guests” and have not paid for their tickets.
The trip takes 10 minutes from takeoff to landing.
The crew will experience about three minutes of weightlessness at the top of their flight path before their capsule parachutes down to reduce speed on descent and land near their launch site in Texas.
Previous flights had actor William Shatner, in October, and Bezos himself, in July.
The supersonic trip was successfully completed and Bezos was responsible for opening the capsule door for the six passengers to exit.
