Blue sapphire over 300 kg is put on display in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan authorities on Sunday displayed what they said was the world’s largest natural blue sapphire corundum, weighing 310 kilograms, which was found in a jewelry pit about three months ago.

Local gemologists, who examined the sapphire, said it was one of the rarest gems in the world. International organizations have not yet certified the gemstone.

The sapphire was displayed in the home of one of the owners of the gem pit in Horana, 65 kilometers south of Colombo, the country’s largest city.

A group of Buddhist monks chanted to the stone before it was revealed.

The stone was found in the jewel-rich Ratnapura area, where the local population had already found the world’s largest cluster of star sapphires in the backyard of a house by accident.

Ratnapura is known as the gemstone capital of South Asia. Sri Lanka is a major exporter of sapphires and other precious stones.

The country earned around half a billion dollars from exports of sapphires, diamonds and other jewelry last year, informed the local jewelry industry body.
