BMW believes electric vehicles don’t need more than 600 km of range

The power reserve is one of the main indicators that buyers pay attention to when choosing an electric car. This is not surprising, especially given that charging stations for electric vehicles are not yet found on the roads as often as fuel stations. That is why many automakers, releasing their electric vehicles, are trying to overtake competitors in terms of autonomy. Some of them even try to overcome the 1,000-kilometer mark without recharging. But BMW is not one of them.

2022 BMW i4 project head David Ferrufino told Australian edition of WhichCar that a modern city electric car does not need a range of more than 600 kilometers. According to him, the range of one thousand kilometers is not the goal that BMW pursues when producing electric vehicles. But he noted that the maximum distance that an electric car can cover on a single charge directly depends on the class of the car. For example, if you take the compact BMW i3 hatchback for the city, then it does not need a power reserve of 600 kilometers. The German automaker is focusing on the same figure when developing the new BMW i4.

Rather than pushing the range of its electric vehicles to record highs, Ferrufino said BMW has decided to invest in improving and expanding its charging network.

“We can boast of achievements not only in the field of battery technology, but also in terms of developing our own publicly accessible network of charging stations, which is growing rapidly. Thanks to this, traveling in an electric car across Europe, for example, from Norway to Italy, can already be a pleasant experience today, ”emphasized the top manager of BMW.

He added that BMW is also working to increase the charging speed of its electric cars. It is claimed that the BMW i4 can be charged from 10 to 80% in just 31 minutes using a dedicated 200 kW charger.
