Electrophoretic display company E Ink, also known as “electronic” or “digital” paper, announced that the BMW iX Flow car with E Ink will be showcased at CES 2022, a digital concept car trimmed with E Ink screens and demonstrating the ability to changes in appearance.
The combination of E Ink e-paper with BMW’s design approaches allows the car’s appearance to dynamically change by choosing between black and white screens. BMW iX Flow uses the E Ink Prism electrophoretic film developed by E Ink for the architecture and design markets. It is fully programmable, giving BMW creative freedom to change the pattern. E Ink allegedly worked closely with their BMW counterparts to create “optimal functionality and perfect color switching for their complex laser-cut screens that match the car’s contours.”
In addition to individualization, the customizable exterior contributes to the vehicle’s energy efficiency. By choosing white on hot sunny days and black on cold days, you can reduce the energy consumption for heating and cooling the passenger compartment. E Ink digital paper itself only consumes energy when changing color. Since E Ink displays do not emit light, they look like paint to achieve a natural visual experience of the machine.
