The pilot call of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) to buy R$ 10 million in carbon credits, launched in March, selected five of the 11 proposals received. The selected projects total R$ 8.7 million in credits, informs the development bank.
The five projects selected in the BNDES pilot call were developed by Biofílica, Solví, Sustainable Carbon, Carbonext and Tembici.
The public call contemplated forest conservation projects, recovery of degraded areas or clean energy. The proposals are developed by specialized consultancies, together with landowners with native forest, non-profit entities that work with local communities or companies that own energy generation plants, among others.
The BNDES’ idea is to repeat the dose in new calls to buy carbon credits. When he announced the pilot call, in March, the director of Participations, Capital Markets and Indirect Credit at BNDES, Bruno Lascowsky, said that the development institution’s plan is to make a “robust and substantial” move, investing R$ 100 million to R$ 300 million in the purchase of credits in the next two years.
The five projects selected include forest conservation, vehicle replacement and power generation.
The Biofílica Investimentos Ambientais project provides for environmental conservation in an area of 94,289 hectares in the municipalities of Machadionho dOeste and Cujubum, in Rondônia, in conjunction with the Association of Residents of Extractive Reserves Rio Preto – Jacundá and Ribeirinhos do Rio Machado – Asmorex.
Carbonext Tecnologia em Soluções Ambientais also presented a forest conservation project and social development and biodiversity actions in Bujari (Acre), in an area of 20,669 hectares, in partnership with Copacabana Agropecuária, Leblon Agropecuária, Ipanema Agropecuária and Bela Aliança Agropecuária .
Revita Engenharia was selected with a project to generate energy from methane in a sanitary landfill located in Quatá (São Paulo). Sustainable Carbon, in partnership with Cerâmica Gomes de Mattos, proposed a project to replace fuel with renewable biomass in Crato (Ceará).
Tembici Participações is the company that operates shared bicycle rental systems in several cities, including São Paulo and Rio. Its project, in partnership with Transportes Sustentáveis and M2 Soluções em Engenharia, will generate carbon credits with the “switching of fuel in the transport matrix”, informed the BNDES.
Pollution from the vehicles that transport the bikes between rental stations is among the company’s biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
