At least five African migrants have died and another 10 are missing after a boat sank in the Tunisia as they tried to cross the Mediterranean to Italy, a judicial official said on Saturday (7).
The coast guard rescued 20 migrants who were on the overcrowded boat, which sank in Louata, in the region of Sfax, on Friday (6), the official told Reuters.
The Sfax coastline has become an important starting point for people fleeing poverty in Africa and the Middle East in search of a better life in Europe.
In recent months, hundreds of people have drowned off the coast of Tunisia, with attempts to cross from Tunisia and Libya to Italy increasing.
In light of an unprecedented economic and financial crisis in Tunisia, more than 18,000 Tunisians traveled by boat to Europe in 2022, according to human rights group Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights.
