A boat carrying Nigerian students capsized in Kano state, northern Nigeria, killing at least 29 people, local officials told Reuters on Wednesday (1st).
The boat, which was on the Watari Dam, was carrying about 40 students from an Islamic school, most of them under 18, and capsized at 5:30 am local time on Tuesday night, a local government official said.
Kano State Fire Service Spokesperson Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi said rescue workers had recovered 29 bodies.
“What we know is that the boat was overcrowded,” said Abdullahi.
Local government official Aminu Bello Gogori said seven students had been rescued and were receiving hospital treatment.
Two local residents, Umar Shuaibu and Tanko Isa, said that although there were a few adults on the boat, most were under 18, some as young as 6 years old.
They said that all seven rescued were children.
