Bob Menendez’s appeal against conviction dismissed

Former Sen. Bob Menendez’s appeal of a conviction, in which he claimed his recent corruption conviction should be thrown out because jurors improperly considered evidence during their verdict deliberations, has been dismissed. Judge Sidney Stein’s ruling paves the way for the former New Jersey senator’s sentencing to be announced on Wednesday, January 29. Prosecutors are seeking a 15-year prison sentence for the former chairman of the powerful US Senate Foreign Relations Committee. They admitted in November that jurors considered nine pieces of evidence that contained information that should have been redacted, but stressed that the error did not justify overturning the conviction. Menendez’s lawyers argued that the material in question contained the only evidence linking the former senator to the main charge, that he was being bribed in exchange for influencing the provision of military aid to Egypt.
