Bobi, the oldest dog in the world, dies at age 31

Bobi, the oldest dog in the world, aged 31 years and 165 days, died last Saturday (21). His death was announced by Dr. Karen Becker, a veterinarian who met Bobi several times.

In her post, Karen wrote: “Last night this sweet boy got his wings. Although he survived every dog in history, his 11,478 days on earth would never be enough for those who loved him. Good luck, Bobi… you taught the world everything you were supposed to.”

According to Karen, when she asked Leonel, Bobi’s owner, what his recipe was for his exceptionally long life, his response was: “Good nutrition, constant contact with nature, freedom to discover the environment, consistent veterinary care and love . Bobi knows he is deeply loved.”

According to the “SIC Notícias” website, Bobi was hospitalized a few days ago, but did not survive. “We started specific treatment. However, he did not resist. It was a tough fight and only a warrior like him could have lasted that long”, said Leonel.

“The best memories remain of a long life where he was happy and, above all, made many people happy, especially his family who today feel that one of their pillars has collapsed.”

Bobi was a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, a breed of Portuguese dog trained to guard livestock, according to his owner.

Bobi lived with the Costa family, in the Portuguese village of Conqueiros. According to Guinness, Bobi was announced as the oldest dog in the world and the oldest dog of all time on February 2, 2023. Bobi was registered in 1992 with the Medical-Veterinary Service of the Municipality of Leiria, which confirmed his date of birth.

Bobi’s age was also verified by SIAC, a pet database authorized by the Portuguese government and managed by SNMV (Sindicato Nacional dos Médicos Veterinários; Sindicato Nacional dos Veterinarians).

According to Guinness, Bobi was born from a litter of four puppies, but Leonel’s parents decided to take the puppies while their mother was away, because they could not keep any new pets. Bobi, however, remained behind, hidden among a pile of wood stored in the annex where he was born.

Bobi was soon discovered by Leonel and his brothers, who kept the puppy’s existence a secret. When his parents finally found out about Bobi, it was too late to abandon him, so Bobi became part of the family.

According to Leonel, the “calm and peaceful” environment in which Bobi lived contributed to him breaking the age record. Furthermore, Bobi has never been tied up, chained or controlled – he has always enjoyed roaming freely in the nature around his home.

As he grew older, Bobi became less mobile, so he spent most of his time in the yard with his feline friends. Leonel described him as a “very sociable” dog.

Leonel believes that Bobi’s diet also contributed to his longevity, as he ate exclusively the same as his owners. “What we ate, they also ate,” said Leonel. Bobi had many fans around the world – as evidenced by the more than 100 people who attended his 31st birthday party.
