Bodies of 14 dead will be transferred to Manaus on Sunday morning, mayor of Barcelos tells CNN

After work by competent authorities early this Sunday morning (17) on the bodies of the 14 killed in the plane crash in Barcelos (AM), they will be transferred to the capital Manaus and, from there, sent to their families in their respective states, stated to CNN Edson Mendes, mayor of the city.

Among the dead, people from Brasília, São Paulo and Minas Gerais have already been identified, according to Mendes.

In the initial action of the authorities, made up of representatives from the government of the state of Amazonas, the Military Police, the Civil Police, the Legal Medical Institute (IML) and the Fire Department, techniques will be used to collect and confirm data and preserve evidence”, explained the Center for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa).

Agents must also check damage caused to the aircraft, or by the aircraft, and try to gather other information about the circumstances of the accident.

“This aircraft will return [a Manaus] with the 14 bodies, all properly accommodated, inside the funeral urns, to be sent to their families, in their respective states”, said the mayor of Barcelos.

“Not normal weather”

At the time of the plane crash, it was raining heavily in Barcelos and other planes even canceled landings at the city’s airport, reported Mayor Edson Mendes.

“It was raining a lot in the city, an unusual storm for the region. Two aircraft had given up on landing [no aeroporto da cidade]aborted the procedure and returned to Manaus.”

Sport fishing

Also according to Mendes, the victims had been visiting the city, 400km from Manaus, for many years to practice sport fishing.

“We have information that the aircraft was chartered by a businessman who works in the sport fishing sector in Barcelos. Barcelos is an international destination for sport fishing, attracting people from Brazil and around the world.

“All of them were already used to sport fishing in Barcelos. Some of them have been fishing in Barcelos for almost 20 years”, explained Mendes.
