The Federal Police (PF) believe that at least 25 people were on the boat found adrift in the northeast of Pará. In total, nine bodies were found and documents indicate that the victims are from Mauritania and Mali, in Africa. The investigation, however, suspects that the boat had more occupants when it began the journey.
“At least 25 people were on the drifting vessel found in the Bragança region last Saturday (13). This is the number of raincoats (23 identical green ones and two yellow ones) that were on the boat, according to the expertise of the Federal Police”, says the PF in a note.
According to the PF superintendent in Pará, José Roberto Peres, some documents found on the boat also indicate that the vessel left Africa after January 17, 2024 and that the victims were migrants.
The distance estimated by the PF from where the boat was adrift until it was found in Pará was 4,800 km.
The Federal Police investigation, which has already begun, must pinpoint exactly where the boat left and the causes of the deaths. Regarding other people who were on the boat and the bodies were not found, the PF did not report any suspicions about what may have happened.
