Boeing 737 MAX: $ 500 million in compensation for 346 victims in Indonesia and Ethiopia

US $ 500 million fund activated to pay compensation to relatives of 346 victims of two tragic plane crashes Boeing.

The fund that opened on Monday (21/6) as broadcast by the Athens News Agency and is part of the construction company’s settlement with the US Department of Justice, the managers of the victims’ claims spoke to Reuters on Tuesday.

Boeing Co agreed in January to pay $ 500 million for compensation the heirs, relatives and beneficiaries of the passengers killed on the flights (Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302) in 2018 and 2019.

Each family of eligible beneficiaries will receive approximately $ 1.45 million and the money will be paid on a rolling basis, as the claims will be filed and their processing will be completed, as stated by managers Ken Feinberg and Camille Biros in a joint statement.

The families of the victims have until October 15th to submit their applications with their claims.

Both the Department of Justice and Boeing declined to comment.

The fund is part of the $ 2.5 billion US Department of Justice settlement reached in January with Boeing after prosecutors charged the company with fraud over the 737 MAX certification process following the crash of a Lion Air aircraft on October 29, 2019 and the Ethiopian Airlines air tragedy on March 10, 2019.

The settlement has allowed Boeing to avoid prosecution, but it does not affect the relatives’ ongoing civil liability.

In July 2019, Boeing instructed Feinberg and Beer to oversee the distribution of a separate $ 50 million to the families of the victims of two crashes of the same type and the distribution of $ 500 million from the new fund. logic.

Although Boeing has settled most of the lawsuits filed against it over the Lion Air crash, it is facing numerous lawsuits filed in federal court in Chicago by the families of the victims of the crash in Ethiopia.

The families ask why the MAX planes were still flying after the first tragic plane crash.

The Justice Department settlement includes a $ 243.6 million fine, as well as $ 1.77 billion in compensation to airlines for fraud-related complaints about the aircraft’s problematic design.

The 737 MAX aircraft were stranded for 20 months after the two tragic plane crashes. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has lifted the ban after Boeing moved software upgrades and changes to the MAX pilot training program.
