BoG: ‘Jump’ 146.7% in travel receipts in 2021

Both travel receipts and incoming travel traffic recorded a three-digit increase in December, the figures for the whole of 2021 improving even more, as shown by the data of the Bank of Greece (BoG).

According to the provisional data, the travel balance in December 2021 showed a surplus of 64.0 million euros, compared to a surplus of 2.2 million euros in the corresponding month of 2020. In particular, an increase of 406.9% was recorded in December 2021. travel receipts, which amounted to 176.6 million euros, compared to 34.8 million euros in the corresponding month of 2020, while an increase of 244.4% was also observed in travel payments (December 2021: 112.6 million euros, December 2020: EUR 32.7 million).

The increase in travel receipts is due to the increase in incoming travel traffic by 294.0%, as well as the average expenditure per trip by 25.7%. Net receipts from travel services offset by 2.3% the balance of goods deficit and contributed 14.8% to total net receipts from services.

In the year 2021, the travel balance showed a surplus of 9,533.8 million euros, compared to a surplus of 3,525.9 million euros in 2020. An increase of 6,334.3 million euros (146.7%) was presented by travel receipts, which were formed to 10,653.1 million euros, while an increase of 326.4 million euros (41.2%) was also observed in travel payments, which amounted to 1,119.2 million euros. The increase in travel receipts is due to the increase in incoming travel traffic by 99.4%, as well as the average expenditure per trip by 22.1%. Net receipts from travel services offset by 37.2% the balance of goods deficit and contributed 72.6% to total net receipts from services.

In December 2021, as mentioned above, travel receipts increased by 406.9% compared to the corresponding month of 2020. More specifically, receipts from residents of EU-27 countries increased by 283.3%, which were formed in € 75.7 million, while receipts from residents of non-EU-27 countries increased by 542.0% (December 2021: € 96.8 million, December 2020: € 15.1 million). The increase in receipts from residents of EU-27 countries was a result of the increase in receipts from residents of euro area countries by 290.4% (December 2021: 60.7 million euros, December 2020: 15.5 million. residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro area by 256.8%, amounting to EUR 15.0 million.

In particular, for the most important countries of origin of travelers from the euro area, receipts from Germany increased by 178.3% and amounted to 17.6 million euros and those from France by 510.0% to 8.7 million . euro. From outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom increased by 503.2% to € 25.7 million, while receipts from the US increased by 756.7% to € 9 million. , 2 million euros. Receipts from Russia also increased by 1,706.9% and amounted to 7.6 million euros.

In the year 2021, travel receipts increased by 146.7% compared to 2020 and amounted to 10,653.1 million euros. This development is due to the increase of receipts from residents of EU-27 countries by 141.2%, which amounted to 6,894.6 million euros, as well as receipts from residents of non-EU-27 countries by 147.7 %, which amounted to EUR 3,596.4 million.

More specifically, receipts from residents of euro area countries amounted to 5,622.2 million euros, increased by 133.7%, while receipts from residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro area increased by 181.1% and amounted to 1,272.4 million euros. In particular, receipts from Germany increased by 108.9% compared to 2020 and amounted to 2,369.5 million euros and receipts from France by 172.0% to 999.4 million euros. From outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom increased by 97.9% to € 1,495.6 million. Receipts from the US also increased by 605.3% to 607.0 million euros and those from Russia by 705.2% to 115.2 million euros.

Incoming travel traffic

Incoming travel traffic in December 2021 amounted to 380.5 thousand travelers, increased by 294.0% compared to the corresponding month of 2020. In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 464.4% compared to December by 2020 and this through road border stations by 192.1%. The increase in incoming travel traffic came both from the increase in travel traffic from EU-27 countries by 219.7% and from non-EU-27 countries by 373.4%.

More specifically, travel traffic from the euro area countries amounted to 127.8 thousand travelers, increased by 277.7%. Travel traffic from EU-27 countries outside the euro area also increased by 97.6%, reaching 31.7 thousand travelers. In particular, travel traffic from Germany increased by 297.6% to 43.2 thousand travelers, while that from France increased by 503.4% to 15.1 thousand travelers. Regarding non-EU-27 countries, travel traffic from the United Kingdom increased by 497.5% to 42.9 thousand travelers and from the USA by 522.8% to 14.4 thousand travelers. Finally, travel traffic from Russia also increased by 778.9% and amounted to 8.0 thousand travelers.

In the year 2021, the incoming travel traffic increased by 99.4% and amounted to 14,704.9 thousand travelers, compared to 7,374.5 thousand travelers in 2020. In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 109.5%, while through road border stations increased by 69.5%.

During the year under review, travel traffic from EU-27 countries amounted to 10,123.0 thousand travelers, showing an increase of 107.0% compared to 2020. Travel traffic from non-EU-27 countries amounted to 4,581.9 thousand travelers, increased by 84.4%. Travel traffic from euro area countries increased by 113.5% and that from EU-27 countries outside the euro area by 91.6%. In particular, travel traffic from Germany increased by 96.6% and amounted to 3,001.2 thousand travelers, while that from France increased by 150.5% to 1,174.5 thousand travelers.

Regarding non-EU-27 countries, travel traffic from the United Kingdom increased by 48.9% to 1,591.2 thousand travelers, while that from the United States increased by 271.6% to 396.0 thousand. travelers. Finally, travel traffic from Russia increased by 365.3% and amounted to 119.5 thousand travelers.
