Dozens of garbage collectors flooded Bolivar Square in the capital Bogota (Colombia) yesterday, gathering about 15 tonnes of recyclable materials in protest to reduce their income and inappropriate working conditions. The collectors, collecting plastic, cardboard and metals from homes, factories and office buildings, amount to about 20,000 in the city. According to the Associated Press, the mobilization was organized by 14 collectors’ associations, with participants complaining about the fall in recyclable materials and increasing competition from immigrants in the labor market. Jorge Ospina, president of the Araus Union, said the price of plastic has fallen from 75 to 50 cents per kilo, which makes it difficult to survive the collectors. “Government intervention is needed,” he said, warning that the decline in prices may lead to the abandonment of recycling and overload of landfills.
