Bolivia has declared a national state of emergency due to devastating wildfires, the country’s defense ministry announced Saturday (7).
“So far, adding up the areas of pasture and forests affected by the fire, we have 3.8 million hectares affected,” said the Minister of the Environment, Alan Lisperguer.
Bolivia has faced its highest number of wildfires since 2010, with at least 3 million hectares burned this year, according to Inpe, Brazil’s space agency that monitors the fires.
South America is at the height of its fire season, which runs from August to September, after an early fire season that began ravaging the country in July amid a drought.
