Bolivia: Nearly 1.5 million acres were reduced to ashes in Santa Cruz alone

Forest fires have swept 1.5 million acres of land so far this year in Santa Cruz County alone. Bolivia, near the border with Brazil, local authorities announced.

In total 1,472,540 acres of land have been burned, said Giovenka Rosado, who is coordinating efforts to deal with the fires in the region, in a press release.

“In areas where the flames exceed five meters in height and the smoke columns exceed 40 meters in height, we will launch water drops with (military helicopter) Super Puma,” he added.

In the area of San Matias, which is severely affected by fires, a natural park is in serious danger of being destroyed.

In the first days of August alone, “831 outbreaks” of fire were recorded, while the fires have reached “15,555 during the year”, the official added.

The deforestation recorded in Bolivia – a country of 12 million people but with an area of one million square kilometers or more – for the creation of pastures or agricultural holdings partly explains these phenomena.

The Friends of Nature Foundation (Fundación amigos de la naturaleza, FAN), a Bolivian non-governmental organization, estimates that 23 million acres of forest and pasture were destroyed by fire in 2020.

In 2019, giant fires turned 64 million acres into remnants in the part of the country located in the Amazon, according to the same NGO.
