Bolivia summons Argentine ambassador after Milei government talks about coup attempt

Bolivia’s government summoned Argentina’s ambassador following comments from President Javier Milei’s office, which called allegations of a coup attempt last week in La Paz “fraudulent.”

The Bolivian ambassador to Argentina was also called for consultations.

Maria Nela Prada, Bolivia’s interim foreign minister, said at a news conference that her government “strongly rejects” the comments from Milei’s office.

General Juan José Zuniga, now detained, led military units on Wednesday (26) to gather in the main square of La Paz, where the presidential palace and the Bolivian Congress are located.

An armored vehicle knocked on the palace door for soldiers to enter the building.

Zuniga later said he was following an order from President Luis Arce, who denied having any involvement or prior knowledge of the military’s operation.

But, on Sunday (30), Javier Milei’s office issued a statement stating that the Bolivian government’s statements on the matter were “not very reliable” and “repudiated the false accusation of a coup d’état made by the Bolivian government on June 26 , confirmed as fraudulent”.
