Bolivian butchers throw horns against police in an act against inflation

Bolivia butchers gathered on Thursday in La Paz to protest the price increases that severely impacted their profits and made it harder for families to buy meat.

Members of the National Confederation of Bolivian meat workers marched through the city, in an act against inflation and demanding a meeting with President Luis Arce. During the demonstration, participants threw cows and carcasses against police officers accompanying the movement.

Protesters rejected an invitation to meet with other officers, criticizing the Minister of Rural and Earth Development, Yamil Flores, for their statements that they earned up to 20 Bolivian profit pesos (about $ 17), according to local media reports.

According to the National Institute of Statistics, inflation in March reached 1.71% in Bolivia, with an accumulated rate of 5% in the first quarter.

In February, the Bolivian government suspended meat exports to contain the increase in prices, as the cost of a pound of beef had fired 60 Bolivians (just over $ 51), according to the media.

However, protesters included in their demands an extension of the suspension for two or three years and requested actions against smuggling to neighboring countries.

La Paz also faced streets blocks on Thursday due to a strike of public transport drivers, while the local government plans to reverse an increase in transport tariffs that had been negotiated and approved in February, according to media reports.
