Bolsonaro accuses Moraes of failing to comply with the agreement articulated by Temer

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Tuesday (7) that the letter written with the help of former president Michel Temer (MDB) and released after the protests on Sete de Setembro last year involved an agreement with the Minister of the Supreme Court. Federal Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes.

According to Bolsonaro, Moraes “did not comply with any of the items” agreed for the letter to be published, without detailing the terms of the agreement.

Bolsonaro’s speech took place in an interview with SBT’s Perspectivas program. The president said he did not have recordings of the conversation with Temer and Moraes.

“I didn’t say this to anyone, I’m saying it to you first. There was me, Michel Temer and a cell phone in front of me. We called Alexandre de Moraes and spoke to him three times, and we agreed on certain things to sign that letter. He didn’t fulfill any of the items I agreed with him,” he said.

“Of course, I didn’t record this conversation, for ethical reasons, I would never do that. But I say that Alexandre de Moraes did not fulfill one of the things that we agreed at that moment to sign that letter”, he added.

Asked what was agreed at the time, Bolsonaro said he would not respond.

“No, I won’t tell you. The letter is public, we agreed there, there are other issues to reduce the pressure on this persecution that he [Moraes] it still does today on people who support me”, declared the president, citing the removal of the mandate of state deputy Fernando Francischini (União Brasil-PR), which is on trial at the Federal Supreme Court.

On the holiday of Sete de Setembro 2021, during a protest on Avenida Paulista, in São Paulo, Bolsonaro declared that the Brazilian electoral system did not offer security and said that “any decision by Mr Alexandre de Moraes, this president will no longer comply”.

“His time is up. Get out, Alexandre de Moraes. Stop being a scoundrel,” he said at the time.

Two days after the demonstration, Bolsonaro met with Temer and released a letter stating that he had “no intention of harming any of the Powers”.

He also said that his words “sometimes blunt, came from the heat of the moment”.

Explanation of the use of the term “going to war”

Asked about a speech last week, when he said that “a new class of thief” has emerged that tries to “steal our freedom” – and, if necessary, “we will go to war” –, Bolsonaro replied that he was talking about demonstrations not only in the streets, because this “does not touch Alexandre de Moraes, Edson Fachin and Luís Roberto Barroso”.

“It’s going to the streets, but also now not just going to the streets. Know what I intend to do in a continuous act. That the population just going to the streets does not sensitize Alexandre de Moraes, Fachin, Barroso, does not sensitize these people. They are intent on putting the left back in power”, the president attacked, citing again that Fachin was “the rapporteur of the process that set Lula free”, in Bolsonaro’s words.

THE CNN sought out ministers Alexandre de Moraes, Edson Fachin and Luis Roberto Barroso, who preferred not to speak out. Former president Michel Temer was also sought, but he has not yet responded.

The president was also asked whether the term “going to war” means the use of weapons. Bolsonaro denied.

“No one is going to take up arms, no, that’s not it. People always take it one way. It has nothing to do with it. This war is an internal war. Now, we must respect the popular manifestation. This is the essence of democracy. From the looks of it, some here don’t give a damn about it. But don’t forget that the population, we are on their side,” she said.

Act on the 7th of September this year

Bolsonaro also stated that there will be a new Sete de Setembro act this year, amid the election campaign and less than a month before the first round, scheduled for October 2.

According to him, it will be “a concentration in the capitals and also a support for a possible candidate who is disputing”.

“From what I can see, it’s being organized out there, and I applaud it. They will participate in Sete de Setembro here in Brasília, the people must participate. Not only for Sete de Setembro, but also… when you talk about Sete de Setembro, it’s Independence, right? We want our complete independence, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, freedom of movement, of conscience, and not what these two or three of the TSE want to impose on all of us”, he criticized.

Bolsonaro said he intends to participate in the act, but cast doubt on moving to other capitals besides Brasília.

“The forecast is to participate. There’s going to be a big parade in Brasília, then I don’t know if I’m going somewhere or not. But it will be election season. I can’t travel around Brazil with the air force with me. It’s different this time, I can only travel to official events. I cannot attend an event anywhere else as a positive manifestation. I’ll see what I’ll do then. But I do intend to participate in this movement if we have the resources to do so”, he said.
