The meeting between President Jair Bolsonaro and the US president, Joe Biden, was a “diplomatic action” of approximation, but it should not “bring great advances in the coming months”, according to ESPM International Relations professor Denilde Holzhacker.
In an interview with CNN Radio she said that the White House statement after the bilateral meeting points out that the two presidents have common interests, but “at no point is there an indication of action, of policies that will be carried out in common.”
“What is expected, at the end of a meeting like this, is a balance of the discussions and an indication of what the next steps will be, if they will move towards a referral in terms of agreements, and that was not what happened”, he explained.
According to the teacher, “there was diplomatic action to establish dialogue, but without a next step.”
“For us, analysts, it was another one-off action that may not have any great effect at this time. An important point is that, during the electoral process, the US tendency is not to take big action because it is not known what the next government will be,” he said.
Denilde believes that the relationship between Brazil and the United States will continue to be one of “distance”, at least this semester.
In the professor’s assessment, Bolsonaro uses the Summit of the Americas for a domestic issue, to “show that there is no international isolation, that he participates and dialogues with the countries of the region”.
However, she believes that the moment would be important to “approach and define important agendas, such as in the economy and investments”.
