Bolsonaro cites Brazil Aid of R$ 600 as a way to “serve everyone”

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) cited this Friday (24) the federal government’s proposal to increase the amount paid by the Auxílio Brasil program, which replaced the Bolsa Família created by the PT governments.

Four months before the presidential elections, the government intends to recreate the R$200 emergency aid to assist the 18.1 million families who already receive the R$400 from Auxílio Brasil. In practice, the beneficiary would receive R$ 600. The information was advanced by CNN on Wednesday (22).

“We are going through difficult times in our Brazil and in the world, inflation, a price increase that affects the entire globe, the whole world, but we can overcome this. As the press is announcing that Auxílio Brasil will go from 400 to 600 reais, it is the government understanding the suffering of the most humble and in this way seeking to serve everyone,” he said.

The statement was made during the delivery of affordable housing for the Casa Verde and Amarela program in João Pessoa, Paraíba.

According to the president, in Paraíba alone, around 1.5 million people receive Auxílio Brasil. In his speech, he tried to differentiate his government’s program from PT initiatives.

Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), his main opponent, has led the polls.

“Back then, with the Bolsa Família, anyone who went to work lost the Bolsa Família. With Auxílio Brasil, you can work and you won’t lose the aid,” he said.

Bolsonaro said that the change in the benefit is not a “virtue of a government”, but an “obligation”.

“In addition, a government that does not steal, a government that is not corrupt, is also an obligation. We are leaving behind this sad moment in our history,” he said.

The reference to corruption was made two days after the arrest of former Minister of Education Milton Ribeiro, on Wednesday, on suspicion of influence peddling and passive corruption when he was in charge of the portfolio.

On Thursday (23), Bolsonaro said during an internet broadcast that he “exaggerated” when he said, in March, that he would “put his face on fire” for Ribeiro.

The president said, however, that he continues to believe in the innocence of the former minister and that there was no materiality for the arrest warrant. Ribeiro was released on Thursday.
