Bolsonaro did not make a “Letter to the Nation” to support demonstrations

Misleading: A publication that alleges that the current president, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), has published a “Letter to the Nation” after the result of the 2nd round of the elections, in which he would accuse all other leaders before him of being from the left and would say that he and his supporters allegedly debunked “that the ‘differences’ of the past were nothing more than 50 shades of red”. The text, in fact, was published by Bolsonaro, but on September 29, and not through an official note, but on his Twitter account. The last “Official Declaration to the Nation” made by the current president was on September 9, 2021, after having attacked institutions in the acts of Independence Day of Brazil that year.

investigated content🇧🇷 Video with images of Bolsonarist demonstrations and audio with narration of a supposed “Letter to the Nation” by Jair Bolsonaro. On the images, there is a caption that says: “letter to (sic) Brazilian nation”.

where it was published: TikTok and Instagram.

Conclusion of Comprova: A video that alleges that President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has published a “Letter to the Nation” is misleading, a type of official document that demonstrates a position on a certain subject, in which he would have stated that all former rulers of Brazil were of left and that it was their responsibility to unmask “this theater”.

With images of Bolsonarist demonstrations held after the election and a voice-over narration, the recording reproduces a text published on Bolsonaro’s official Twitter account, on September 29, before the 1st round of the elections. The post-election protests call for a coup d’état following the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the race for the presidency.

As it was published before the elections, Bolsonaro’s text does not refer to recent acts. He wrote the statement in response to a photo of Lula next to supporters of your candidacybefore the first round of elections, which took place on October 2.

The last text officially released as the President’s Letter to the Nation, released by the government, was dated September 9, 2021, written by former representative Michel Temer (MDB)🇧🇷 In it, Bolsonaro recanted after a coup-like speech he made during the Independence Day demonstrations that year.

misleading, for Comprova, is content removed from the original context and used in another so that its meaning undergoes changes; that uses inaccurate data or that induces an interpretation different from the author’s intention; content that is confusing, with or without the deliberate intent to cause harm.

publication reach: Comprova investigates suspicious content with greater reach on social networks. As of the morning of November 17, the misleading post had more than 461,500 views and 24,500 likes on TikTok.

What the person responsible for the publication says: The creator of the verified content’s account on TikTok does not allow sending messages. The report looked for the same user on other networks, but did not find any matching profile.

How do we check: We searched Google for the term “Letter to the Nation”, as the TikTok video entitles the narrated text, but only news of the “Official Declaration to the Nation”, by Jair Bolsonaro, of September 9, 2021, appeared.

Then, to find the origin of the text used in the post, with the help of the application “Transcriptor”, we transcribed the speeches of the narrator of the post and Googled the excerpts, which led us to the tweets published on Bolsonaro’s official Twitter profile – which corresponds exactly to what is said in the investigated content.

The audio narrator used in the TikTok video identifies himself as Nando Pinheiro. With that, we searched for his name on Twitter and found his official account. In it, there was a link that redirected us to his WhatsApp. Comprova sent a message to his number, which responded promptly and acknowledged the authorship of the audio that was used in the verified piece, but that had been recorded for another video.

Bolsonaro’s Last Letter to the Nation

In the entitled “Official Declaration to the Nation”released on September 9, 2021, President Bolsonaro recanted the attacks on the 7th of September against the Federal Supreme Court and, in particular, against Minister Alexandre de Moraes, in an attempt to appease the climate between the Powers of the Republic. At the time, Bolsonaro said that the Brazilian electoral system is not secure and called Moraes a “scoundrel”🇧🇷

The text, written by former president Michel Temer and signed by the current president, states that Bolsonaro never had “the intention of attacking any of the powers”.

The text of the alleged letter is a sequence of tweets by Bolsonaro

The text used for the video’s narration is actually a sequence of tweets published by Bolsonaro on September 29 of this year, before the first round of the election, held on October 2.

The post contains, in addition to the opinion text of the Chief Executive, a photo of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, then candidate, next to supporters🇧🇷

In addition to Lula, the photo also includes Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and the presidential candidates from previous years: Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), Luciana Genro (PSOL), Cristovam Buarque (Citizenship), Marina Silva (Network), Fernando Haddad (PT ), Henrique Meirelles (União Brasil) and João Goulart Filho (PCdoB). Bolsonaro made several criticisms of these politicians and supporters of Lula, accusing them of “false diversity” so that the “leftist ideology” prevailed in the country.

Who is the author of the audio used in the verified video

On his website and on social media, Nando Pinheiro introduces himself as an “actor, announcer, lecturer and reference in voiceover in Brazil”. He has over 20 years of experience in the storytelling business. Her YouTube channel has 2.1 million subscribers. On the platform, Pinheiro publishes several religious and motivational videos.

The video in question states that the audio is narrated by Nando Pinheiro, who was candidate for federal deputy for the PL and is known for recording motivational videos on your YouTube channel and for doing professional narrations.

Nando Pinheiro confirmed to Projeto Comprova, in WhatsApp messages, that he was the author of the video narration. However, he claims that he made another video with the audio to share with Bolsonaro’s friends and followers in WhatsApp groups. According to him, the audio went viral and was used by other people in different publications.

The narrator also said that he did not remember exactly the date he made the recording, but that it would have been between September 15th and 30th. Nando also stated that he only “reproduced” Jair Bolsonaro’s publication on social networks to share with supporters of the current President of the Republic.

According to Pinheiro, the recording was made spontaneously, without any request from the president’s campaign. “Normal audio as I record for thousands [de pessoas]🇧🇷 But they took my voice and reproduced it in other videos that I am not the author of”, he noted about the other videos that were already circulating on the networks using the same audio.

why do we investigate: Comprova investigates suspicious content that goes viral on social media about the pandemic, federal government public policies and presidential elections. Even after the elections, false and misleading materials still circulate to discredit the electoral system, political figures and Brazilian institutions. Manifestations in this sense, with unfounded allegations, try to take away the credibility of the process and reach democracy.

Other checks on the topic: On the text published by Jair Bolsonaro on his official Twitter account, accusing that all other Brazilian politicians are, like Lula, “red”, the vehicle of checks to the facts also carried out a publication check that said that the text had been posted after Bolsonaro was not re-elected in the second round of elections, on October 30. In other checks, Comprova has already explained Article 142, which does not provide for military or federal intervention🇧🇷 and about the audits that attest to the reliability of the electoral system🇧🇷
