In an effort to regain support in the business segment, president Jair Bolsonaro is considering the name of Caixa president, Pedro Guimarães, for the post of vice president on his reelection ticket.
The name of the economist has been mentioned by the president in private conversations, among them, as reported to the CNN Brasil, during the president’s recent trip to Guarujá, on the coast of São Paulo.
The president’s intention was also reported to the CNN Brasil by palace advisors. The president of the financial institution even participated in Bolsonaro’s trip and published a photograph at his side during a fishing trip.
For the second-name post in the presidential hierarchy, Bolsonaro has stated that he is looking for a name with whom he has political affinity, not making a counterpoint to it, and that does not have support from the National Congress.
The president’s fear, according to allied deputies, is that the appointment of a professional politician for the post of vice president could encourage the Legislative Power to initiate an impeachment process in the face of a fall in popularity or a political crisis .
In addition to Pedro Guimarães, the president has been evaluating a possible nomination for the post of vice-president of General Walter Braga Netto, Minister of Defense. In this case, the effort is in an attempt to maintain support with the military segment.
Since early December, Bolsonaro has been advised by allied base leaders to act more effectively to win back the support of entrepreneurs and investors.
In recent weeks, party leaders received the diagnosis from members of the business segment of a dismay with the current administration, especially given the paralysis of the reform agenda and the increase in inflation rates.

Planalto Palace’s concern is also due to the initial euphoria in the financial market with the candidacy of former federal judge Sergio Moro. A survey promoted by XP Investimentos showed that the economic segment believes that Moro would be better than Bolsonaro for financial assets.
Earlier this month, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported that the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) – which measures the country’s official inflation – was 0.95%. Despite having shown a deceleration, the value is the highest for the month since 2015 and, in the accumulated in 12 months, the median of the estimates indicated an increase of 10.9%.
The fear at the Palácio do Planalto is that an accumulated rise in excess of double digits, as it should close this year, could serve as an Achilles’ heel in the presidential race.
