Bolsonaro in meeting with Putin: “We are in solidarity with Russia”

The beginning of the meeting between President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, this Wednesday (16) in Moscow, featured a demonstration of “solidarity” by the Brazilian president with Putin, who is in the midst of a crisis with Ukraine and with NATO member countries.

Soon after meeting with Putin, Bolsonaro said that Brazil was “in solidarity with Russia” and that both countries had “a lot to collaborate on”, citing themes of defense, agriculture and oil and gas.

Bolsonaro’s trip to Russia comes at a time of heightened tension between Moscow and the West over the buildup of Russian troops in the Ukraine border region. The meeting was scheduled before the escalation of the geopolitical crisis.

“I’m sure that even this passage through here gives a picture to the world that we can grow a lot with our bilateral relations”, added the Brazilian president, who also thanked Putin for the pardon granted to Robson Oliveira – driver of Brazilian player Fernando Martins. who was arrested in Russia after transporting a drug illegal in the country, but legal in Brazil.

For the International Analyst CNN, Lourival Sant’Anna, President Bolsonaro’s statement refers to Russia’s current situation on the international stage. “The whole world will read this solidarity as Brazil’s support for the invasion or military intimidation of Ukraine,” he said.

The Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, said in the morning (Russian local time) that the conflict agenda would “certainly” enter the conversation between both, but that the Brazilian position would be to seek a path through a peaceful solution to the talks. .

Until then, the information was that the Brazilian government would not deal with this matter, said the CNN to Russia, Mathias Brotero.

The military mobilization led countries of the Western military alliance (North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO), such as the United States and the United Kingdom, to point to the possibility of an imminent Russian invasion of the neighboring country, which Moscow denies.

Russia opposes NATO’s eastward expansion and wants security guarantees from the West, including a veto on Ukraine’s NATO membership, a proposal that the US and UK reject.

Earlier, Bolsonaro laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow. The president will also participate this Wednesday in a meeting with businessmen. After his visit to Russia, Bolsonaro will head to Hungary before returning to Brazil later this week.
