Bolsonaro inaugurates cornerstone of gas-powered plant in RJ

With the presence of the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Porto do Açu and Gás Natural Açu (GNA) launched this Monday (31), the cornerstone of UTE GNA II, considered the largest natural gas plant. From Latin America.

Located in Porto de Açu, in São João da Barra, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, the plant will have 3 GW of installed capacity, enough to supply energy to 14 million homes. According to the administration, the 1,673 MW are equivalent to 10% of all gas generation capacity available today in the National Interconnected System (SIN). The thermoelectric plant is expected to start operating in 2024.

“We created a business environment with legal certainty. This is what made GNA II possible. Until last year, Brazil had a gas supplier. Today, there are 7. It’s a time to celebrate and give thanks. If it weren’t for GNA I last year, we would have had difficulty overcoming the country’s water crisis,” said Mines and Energy Minister Bento Albuquerque.

In September 2021, the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) had already authorized the start of commercial operations at the Gás Natural do Açu I Thermoelectric Power Plant (GNA I), also located in Porto do Açu.

“I just want to thank the company involved in this project. In addition to the previous project, it will make us the greatest power in the generation of gas energy in Latin America”, celebrated Jair Bolsonaro.

In addition to the cornerstone of GNA II, the government also signed a contract for the construction of a railroad in the state of Rio de Janeiro. With investments of more than R$ 610 million, the project foresees the installation of 41 km of railroad network, connecting Norte Fluminense to strategic points for the export and import of iron ore.

“This is just the first authorization of the Pro Trilhos program. There is no money, but there is will. We are making cross-investments, transforming railroad concessions into investments. We have already received 79 requests for authorization for the construction of railways in Brazil”, highlighted the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio de Freitas.
