Brazilian President Zaich Bolsonaro left for Russia on Monday, where he is expected to arrive today for a controversial visit amid a crisis with Ukraine.
At the same time, Brasilia tried to reassure Kiev during a telephone conversation between Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos Franca and his Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Couleba.
Franca was “briefed on the situation on the border between Ukraine and Russia by his counterpart” and “reiterated Brazil’s position in favor of a peaceful solution,” the Brazilian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Despite the escalation of tensions in Ukraine, Bolsonaru confirmed his visit to Moscow, the timing of which raises questions.
According to analysts, the trip of the far-right president of Brazil, who is expected to go to Hungary on Thursday to meet with his ally, Prime Minister Victor Orban, could not have happened at a worse time.
Bolsonaro explained that his country, a major agricultural producer and exporter, “relies heavily on Russian fertilizers” to justify his trip, which will focus on bilateral issues such as agriculture, energy and defense.
The Brazilian president is expected to meet tomorrow Wednesday in the Kremlin with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, “a strong man” he admires.
