President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Thursday (24) that it is his decision on Brazil’s position in the face of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“The one who speaks for the country is the president and the president is called Jair Messias Bolsonaro. Anyone who has doubts about this just look for Article 84 [da Constituição Federal]. Whoever is saying this is talking about what is not his responsibility,” Bolsonaro said in a broadcast on social media.
The speech comes after Vice President Hamilton Mourão (PRTB) declared that Western countries must use force in support of Ukrainians.
“There has to be the use of force. Really more support for Ukraine than what is being put out there. This is my vision”, said Mourão.
Bolsonaro also claimed that he wants peace and that it interests everyone. “War is of no interest to anyone. In the next few hours we will have a meeting to assess what is happening, but Brazil has its position. Remembering, who talks about these issues is the President of the Republic.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos França, alongside the Chief Executive in the broadcast, expressed that the Embassy of Brazil in Ukraine is open and dedicated to Brazilians. And that together with the Ministry of Defense, it is making a plan to remove these citizens.
“This plan involves contact with neighboring countries. We will only get the Brazilians out of there when we have the necessary conditions for this to happen in a safe and orderly manner. On a trip to Russia on February 17, Bolsonaro spoke alongside President Vladimir Putin, who preaches peace and respects “those who act this way” and who was in solidarity with the country. However, he did not mention the conflict with the Ukrainians.
