Bolsonaro says candidate for vice “will be defined later”

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Monday (13) that the candidate for vice on his ticket will be defined “later”. In a conversation with journalists in front of the Planalto Palace, Bolsonaro said that Walter Braga Netto, former defense minister, is a consensus name, but spoke of other alternatives.

“[Walter Braga Netto] It is a name that is palatable. It’s a consensus name that knows how to talk to parliament. He’s a colleague of mine from the Military Academy, a little younger than I am. It could be the vice. He can be. Some people want Tereza Cristina, it’s an excellent name too. It will be defined later.”

In March, the president signaled that Braga Netto was the favorite for the post, saying that his vice would be from Minas Gerais. The general is from Belo Horizonte. In April, Bolsonaro said the choice was “90%” defined.

Some of the president’s allies, however, advocate that he choose a woman to compose his ticket, in an attempt to garner more votes among the female electorate. In addition to Tereza Cristina, Damares Alves would be an option, according to analyst Renata Agostini.

Braga Netto left the government on March 28, so that he could contest the elections alongside the president.
