Bolsonaro says “girl and baby were victims” in the case of SC

The president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) spoke this Thursday (23) about the case of an 11-year-old girl who was the victim of rape in Santa Catarina and ended up getting pregnant.

“The only certainty about the tragedy of the 7-month pregnant girl is that both she and the baby were victims, innocent souls, lives that should not pay for what they are not guilty of, but be protected from the environment they live in, from the pain of trauma and from the malignant harassment of pro-abortion groups”, wrote the chief executive on his social networks.

“We know that this is a sensitive case, but taking an innocent life, in addition to violating the fundamental right of every human being, does not heal wounds or do justice to anyone, on the contrary, abortion only exacerbates this tragedy! There will always be other paths,” Bolsonaro continued.

In the post, the president attached what would be a photo of a 25-week fetus.

On this Thursday, the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) confirmed that the termination of pregnancy was performed on Wednesday night (22). She was at 29 weeks, which equates to about 7 months of gestation.

The case was revealed in a report published by journalists Paula Guimarães, Bruna de Lara and Tatiana Dias, from the portal Catarinas and the website The Intercept Brasil.

The victim of sexual abuse was taken to a hospital in Florianópolis to perform an abortion, after the pregnancy was confirmed. The institution, however, refused to perform the procedure because the pregnancy had exceeded the limit of weeks allowed by internal rules.

When the case came to court, magistrate Joana Ribeiro Zimmer ordered the girl to be taken to a shelter, using as a justification in one of the orders the “risk” of the mother performing “some procedure to operate the baby’s death”.
