President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Monday (6) that he can recreate up to three ministries if he is reelected in October. He mentioned, by name, the possibility of the return of the Public Security, Fisheries and Industry and Commerce portfolios.
“We intend, in the event of a re-election, to better divide the ministries, create at most three more, so that we can better manage our country,” Bolsonaro said in an interview with broadcaster Agro+.
Asked about the re-establishment of the Ministry of Public Security, which was linked to the Ministry of Justice at the beginning of his government, Bolsonaro said that this measure had already been studied.
“Given the size of Brazil, I think the reestablishment not only of this one but also of some other ministries that there is no doubt, such as Industry and Commerce, for example, is positive,” he said.
“Even the issue of Fisheries can be studied. I confess that, when I took over, I didn’t know the extent of the fishing. I became acquainted with Secretary Jorge Seif”, he added.
Bolsonaro, however, ruled out recreating the portfolios in the current term.
“Not now, because it would depend on the creation of positions, we don’t have the maneuver for that. We created the Ministry of Communications with great difficulty, it was very welcome. And it is being very well managed by Fabio Farias”, he said, recalling the reestablishment of the portfolio in 2020.
The Industry and Commerce and Fisheries portfolios lost their ministry status, respectively, in January 2019 and October 2015. The former was incorporated into the Ministry of Economy at the beginning of the Bolsonaro government; the second became part of the Ministry of Agriculture during Dilma Rousseff’s administration (2011-2016).
In the 2018 campaign, Bolsonaro promised to cut the number of ministries in Brazil if elected president; he even said that an eventual government of his would have 15 ministers, “at most”. At the time, the country had 29 portfolios with ministry status.
The current president started his term with 22 ministries, the number changed to 23 with the recreation of the Communications and Work and Welfare portfolios – during this period, the Central Bank ceased to be a ministry when its autonomy was approved in 2021.
