Bolsonaro says Lula will end the war in Ukraine by “drinking beer”

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) mocked former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) this Monday (2) saying that PT will “end the war in Ukraine by drinking beer”.

The speech was made by the president in front of the Palácio da Alvorada, in Brasília, where he met with supporters.

Bolsonaro referred to a statement by Lula given on March 30, 2022, at an event at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj). At the time, PT asked who was interested in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

“The reason for this war, from what I understand, what I read and what I listen to, would be resolved here in Brazil at a table drinking beer. It would have been resolved here, if not in the first beer, in the second. If not on the second, on the third. If it didn’t happen on the third one, until the bottles ran out we were going to make a peace agreement,” he said.

THE CNN contacted the former president’s advisory about Bolsonaro’s statements and awaits a response.

At the time of the statement, Lula’s adviser said that the former president only defended conflict resolution through dialogue and not wars. “Talking over a beer was a metaphor for diplomacy and dialogue,” the press office said.
