President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Monday (27) that Petrobras will have a “new dynamic” for fuels with Caio Paes de Andrade in the presidency. The state-owned company’s Board of Directors approved the appointment of Paulo Guedes’ former secretary to the position.
During the event to launch the new Brazilian passport, Bolsonaro said that the government’s idea is “not to interfere in anything”.
“You can be sure, today Caio is taking over Petrobras, we will have a new dynamic in the fuel issue in Brazil. Everything will be analyzed, in compliance, on the basis of the law. Without wanting to mess with the pen in the State-Owned Companies Act, without wanting to interfere with anything. But with a lot of respect, with a lot of responsibility, making Brazil really leverage,” he said.
The possibility of modifying the State-Owned Companies Law was raised by the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (Progressistas-AL), as an alternative to curb the rise in prices. The device prevents political appointments to the command of public companies. Paulo Guedes was against the possibility.
Petrobras announced an increase in diesel and gasoline prices on the 17th. The decision angered Bolsonaro and increased pressure on the company’s then president, José Mauro Ferreira Coelho, who ended up resigning.
Despite disagreements about the knowledge and experience of Caio Paes de Andrade to occupy the Presidency of Petrobras, there were only three votes against his name.
The choice of the new president still needs to be approved by the Extraordinary General Meeting of shareholders of the company.
