Bolsonaro suggests action against governors who do not cut ICMS on fuel

President Jair Bolsonaro suggested this Monday (11) that supporters ask for the invoice when they fill up their car at gas stations to file a collective action against governors who do not cut ICMS on fuel.

Last month, the Chief Executive signed a law that sets a 17% ceiling on taxes on fuel, electricity, telecommunications and public transport.

The project was approved in Congress against the will of the state governments, which came to file a lawsuit in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) against the measure.

“You who chose the governor there,” Bolsonaro said at Palácio da Alvorada, after a supporter said that the governor of Ceará, Izolda Cela (PDT), has not yet reduced the ICMS tax rate on fuel.

“Do one thing. When you go to fill up, get the invoice, for, who knows, a collective action against the governor”, amended the president.

Last week, Bolsonaro issued a decree that obliges gas stations to inform consumers “correctly, clearly, accurately, ostensibly and legibly”, fuel prices before and after the ICMS ceiling law comes into force.

In recent weeks, the Planalto Palace and its allies in Congress have been on an offensive to reduce fuel prices less than three months before the October election, when Bolsonaro will run for a second term in charge in the country.

In addition to the ICMS ceiling, a Proposal for an Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) was approved in the Senate that decrees a state of emergency in the country so that the president can grant social benefits without being punished by the Electoral Law.

The package, which still needs to be passed through the Chamber of Deputies, includes a truck driver grant of R$ 1,000 per month, a gas allowance for taxi drivers of R$ 200 per month, an expansion of the gas voucher for low-income families and an increase in the Aid Brazil from R$400 to R$600 per month. All measures are valid only until the end of the year.
