The “solidarity” given by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to Russia, made during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin this Wednesday (16), is contradictory to Brazil’s current diplomatic positions regarding the current conflict in Ukraine, he evaluated to the CNN the coordinator of the Institute of International Relations at USP, Felipe Loureiro.
“Bolsonaro did not give details, but given the serious situation in Ukraine, it was an unfortunate manifestation of the Brazilian president and in contradiction with what Brazilian diplomacy has been saying in international forums”, said Loureiro.
The speech was recorded right at the beginning of the meeting between the two leaders. Later, during a press conference, Bolsonaro did not repeat the phrase and preferred to say that Brazil preached peace and respected “whoever acted like that”.
The professor stressed that there were “positive parts” of the Brazilian president’s statements this Wednesday, such as the “defense of peace, sovereignty of nations and the respect that Brazil has for international law”, but said that the first speech can generate some noise, especially with the United States.
“Brazil accepted the visit, and there was a strong attempt by US diplomacy to cancel it, a pressure that I think is excessive”, he evaluated.
“There are potential negative balances. The declaration on solidarity could create a worsening in bilateral relations between Brazil and the USA, cold relations during the administration of [Joe] Biden,” Loureiro said.
The specialist also highlighted a movement towards closer ties with Russia, a country with which Brazil does not maintain an intense commercial relationship, especially in energy and environmental issues.
“From the point of view of effective cooperation, we have to wait for the next steps”, concluded Loureiro.
